Calea Moșilor is one of the oldest streets in Bucharest, the axis that led from the old town towards the Moși fair and on to Obor. The district around it is a layered mixture of old houses, interwar buildings and blocks from the 1980s built when the street was partly redesigned. This is old Bucharest, with all its irregularities.
Who lives here
Long-standing residents, many of them elderly, in the blocks and the houses, and a growing share of young people who choose the area for its position and for rents lower than in the exact centre. It is a working-class and authentic district, where turnover is slow but real.
What it is like by day
By day the district is lived in: shops at street level, workshops, people doing their shopping, traffic on the main axis. The side streets keep low houses, courtyards and churches, and show what Bucharest was like before the great demolitions. This is an area to look at carefully: the beauty is in the details, not in the whole.
What it is like in the evening
The evening is quiet in the side streets and livelier towards the old town, a few hundred metres away. There are local bars and restaurants used by the people who live here. It is not a nightlife area, but neither is it isolated: you choose how much you go out.
Getting around
The position is convenient. The metro stations of the centre and Obor on the M1 are reachable on foot or with a few surface stops. Trams and buses run along the axis. On foot you reach the old town in a few minutes.
Eating and shopping
Local shops, bakeries, urban supermarkets, and above all the great market of Obor a short distance away, which covers everything. The restaurant offer is simple and local, with a few historic addresses.
When NOT to choose it
The fabric is irregular and partly neglected: old buildings, poor pavements, traffic on the axis. This is not a tidy area. It is the right choice for anyone who wants to be next to the centre while paying less and does not mind the untidiness; the wrong one for anyone looking for order, greenery and buildings in good condition.
