Piața Romană is one of the central squares of Bucharest and one of its busiest hubs. Around the roundabout stand the Academia de Studii Economice, the country's main economics university, offices, shops and cafés, and beneath the square runs the M2, the most important line on the network.
Who lives here
Students from the ASE and the nearby faculties, young professionals working in the offices of the centre, long-standing residents in the interwar buildings of the side streets. It is an area with a lot of demand for rooms precisely because university and work sit within the same radius.
What it is like by day
By day the square is in constant motion: students, commuters, people going in and out of the metro. The side streets are quieter and show the interwar architecture that gives this part of the city its character. Cafés and bookshops are numerous and full.
What it is like in the evening
The evening is lively but without the excesses of the old town. There are bars, restaurants and places frequented by students and by people coming out of work. There is noise, above all on the main roads, but it is more contained than at Universitate. Towards the north, along the streets that lead to Dorobanți, the offer becomes more polished.
Getting around
Piața Romană station on the M2 is the great advantage: it connects north and south of the city in a straight line and puts Universitate and Victoriei one stop away. Buses and trolleybuses run along the boulevards. The whole centre is walkable.
Eating and shopping
Restaurants, cafés and fast food in abundance, with an offer calibrated for a student budget as well. For shopping there are urban supermarkets and shops; the covered market of Amzei is a few minutes on foot and is one of the handiest in the centre.
When NOT to choose it
It is a central and expensive area, with flats that are often old and noisy on the main roads. Greenery is almost absent within the immediate radius. It is perfect if you study at the ASE or work in the centre and want to do everything on foot; wrong if you are looking for quiet, parking or square metres.
