The office and tech district in northern Bucharest: glass towers, multinationals and new residential buildings.
Pipera is the large business and technology hub of Bucharest, at the far north of the city. From a semi-peripheral area it has transformed in just a few years into the main office district, with glass towers, class-A business parks built from 2011 onward, and the headquarters of multinationals, tech companies and startups. It is where a huge slice of corporate Bucharest works, and new residential complexes have grown up around the offices too.
Who lives here
The profile is young and international: people who work in the area's tech, services and multinationals and have chosen to live a short walk from the office in the new residential complexes. It is a population of professionals, often under forty, partly foreign. It is not a historic district with a rooted community, but a new and constantly growing area.
What it's like during the day
By day Pipera is in full working swing: thousands of people in the offices, cafés and company canteens, the constant flow of people in and out of the business parks. It is an area built for work, efficient and modern, with the well-known drawback of rush-hour traffic, when the roads towards the north get congested.
What it's like in the evening
In the evening, with the offices emptied, the area grows quieter. The venues and restaurants tied to the complexes and to its residents remain, but this is not a nightlife area: for a night out people move towards the centre or towards the residential north. It is a district that slows down in the evening.
Getting around
The strong point is the M2 metro, of which Pipera is the northern terminus: from here you head down along the city's main axis to the centre and beyond. The station is the reference point for the whole area. Buses and company shuttles complete the connections. The real Achilles' heel remains road traffic at peak times, which is why so many prefer the metro.
Eating and shopping
The offer is that of a business district: cafés, restaurants and canteens tied to the offices, plus the services and supermarkets in the new residential complexes. For a real neighbourhood experience - markets, venues with character, street life - you have to move; here the corporate and new-residential dimension prevails.
When NOT to pick it
If you are after a neighbourhood with a soul, historic streets and evening life, Pipera is not the place: it is a district of offices and new buildings, convenient for those who work there but without the fabric of a real neighbourhood. Rush-hour traffic is a genuine problem. It makes sense for those who work here and want to cut commuting to zero with the metro; less so for those after atmosphere and neighbourhood life.
