Platforma Pipera is the main business hub of Bucharest: a concentration of towers and office parks grown up from the early 2000s on what used to be an industrial area north of the city. Recent housing has appeared around the offices, and the metro now reaches this far.
Who lives here
Young professionals working in the offices, often in technology and services, foreigners moved here for work, couples without children. It is the area with the highest concentration of qualified workers in the city, and demand for rooms is steady and tied to employment.
What it is like by day
By day it is an office district in every sense: intense flow in the morning, queues in the places at lunchtime, heavy traffic on the access roads. The fabric is recent and orderly but not very urban: large buildings, car parks, few streets built for walking.
What it is like in the evening
In the evening it empties. What remains are the residents of the recent buildings and a few places. This is not a nightlife area and it will not become one: anyone who wants to go out goes down towards Floreasca or into the centre by metro.
Getting around
The M2 reaches its northern terminus serving the area, and that is the great advantage compared with how things used to be. On the surface there are buses. The problem is road traffic at peak times, which in this part of the city is among the worst: anyone who can avoids the car.
Eating and shopping
The offer is calibrated for the offices: good at lunchtime, more limited in the evening and at weekends. There are supermarkets and shopping centres in the northern area. For real shopping and neighbourhood life you have to go south.
When NOT to choose it
It is a functional zone, not a neighbourhood: little street life, little greenery nearby, deserted at weekends. Traffic is its historic problem. It is the right choice for anyone working here who wants to reduce the commute to nothing; the wrong one for anyone looking for a real district to live in.
