Văcărești is the most surprising district in Bucharest when it comes to greenery: at its feet lies Văcărești Nature Park, an expanse of wetlands around a lake that has over the years become a genuine wild reserve, Romania's first protected urban nature area. It is the so-called Delta of Bucharest: 190 hectares of reeds, birds and biodiversity that arose by chance from an unfinished communist hydraulic project and were then reclaimed by nature. Around it, a residential area south-east of the centre that has this wild lung as its defining trait.
