Piața Victoriei is one of the great hubs of Bucharest, the point where the centre ends and the northern city begins. Onto it faces the Victoria Palace, seat of the Government, and around the roundabout are concentrated offices, hotels and some of the most visited museums in the capital. Beneath the square the M1 and the M2 cross, and that makes it one of the best connected places in the city.
Who lives here
Professionals working in the offices of the area, long-standing residents in the smaller buildings of the side streets, foreigners moved here for work. It is not a residential district in the classic sense: it is a hub, and those who live here choose it for the position rather than for the atmosphere. There are rooms to rent but not many, and they are expensive.
What it is like by day
By day the square is traffic and movement: cars on the roundabout, people going in and out of the metro, lunch breaks in the offices. Around it stand the Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History and the Museum of the Romanian Peasant, two of the most visited in the city, which bring families and visitors. The side streets, towards Dorobanți and Aviatorilor, calm down at once and show interwar buildings.
What it is like in the evening
In the evening the traffic drops and the square empties of its offices. Restaurants and hotel bars remain, and a few minutes on foot the bar district of Dorobanți begins. This is not a nightlife area: it is a place you set off from, convenient for getting home late from anywhere in the city thanks to the two lines.
Getting around
This is the strong point of the area and the main reason to choose it. Piața Victoriei station is the interchange between the M1, which loops around the city, and the M2, which crosses it from north to south: from here you reach almost everything without complicated changes. Buses and trolleybuses run along the great boulevards that converge on the square. The old town is a few stops away or a walk along Calea Victoriei.
Eating and shopping
The offer is calibrated for the offices, so it is good at lunchtime and more limited in the evening. There are urban supermarkets, and the covered market of Amzei is a few minutes towards the centre. For a wider choice of restaurants you move towards Dorobanți or towards the centre, both very close.
When NOT to choose it
It is a square, not a neighbourhood: constant traffic, noise on the main roads, little greenery nearby and the atmosphere of a place people pass through. Prices are central and the flats often old. It is the right choice for anyone who puts connections above everything and wants the centre on foot; the wrong one for anyone looking for quiet and neighbourhood life.
