Vitan is a residential district in south-eastern Bucharest, stretched along the Dâmbovița between the centre and the eastern belt. It is made up mostly of blocks from the 1970s and 1980s, with a large shopping centre that has become its main landmark and a position that makes it convenient without being central.
Who lives here
Families, young couples, workers. It is a mid-range area for prices and quality, without the extremes either of the centre or of the far outskirts. The room market is active and steady.
What it is like by day
By day the district is quiet and functional. The flow is concentrated around the shopping centre and along the main roads. The embankments of the Dâmbovița offer a straight walk used by runners. Between the blocks there are courtyards and neighbourhood greenery.
What it is like in the evening
The evening is residential, with the shopping centre open late and a few local bars. To really go out you head towards the centre, reachable in a short time.
Getting around
The area is served by metro stations at its edges, among them Mihai Bravu and Timpuri Noi, and by the great Dristor hub a short distance away. Trams and buses run along the main roads and the embankments. By car the position is convenient towards the south and the east.
Eating and shopping
The shopping centre covers much of what you need, alongside chain supermarkets and local shops. The restaurant offer is varied, between the chains of the shopping centre and the local places.
When NOT to choose it
It is an ordinary district, without strong character or particular beauty. The main roads are busy and the shopping centre brings movement. There is no nightlife. It is the right choice for anyone looking for practicality and mid-range prices; the wrong one for anyone looking for atmosphere.
