Voluntari is a commune of the first ring north-east of Bucharest, attached to the city and much grown over the last twenty years. It is an area running at two speeds: on one side districts of villas and upmarket residential complexes, on the other more ordinary and still semi-rural parts. The closeness to the Pipera office hub has driven its development.
Who lives here
Well-off families in the villa areas, professionals working in the north, foreigners moved here for work, and a longer-standing local population in the historic parts of the commune. There is demand for rooms and it is tied above all to work in the north.
What it is like by day
By day it is residential and quiet in the villa areas, busier along the roads that connect to the city and to the offices. There is greenery and open space, rare so close to Bucharest, and several international schools have chosen this area.
What it is like in the evening
The evening is quiet. There are restaurants and bars, some of good quality, but there is no neighbourhood nightlife. To go out you head down towards Floreasca or into the centre.
Getting around
The best link is the M2 towards the northern terminus, reachable in a few minutes from the closest zones. Buses connect the commune to the city. Traffic on the northern roads at peak times is heavy and is the main limitation. This is an area designed for people with a car.
Eating and shopping
Chain supermarkets, shops and the shopping centres of the northern area cover everything. The restaurant offer is varied, with a few good addresses tied to the clientele of the area.
When NOT to choose it
It is outside the commune of Bucharest, it depends heavily on the car and traffic towards the north is among the worst in the area. Prices in the villa zones are high. It is the right choice for anyone working in the north who wants greenery and space; the wrong one for anyone who does not drive or is on a moderate budget.
