Right bank, south of Deutz, on a long stretch of the Rhine - Poll keeps a small village core around the Pollerwiesen and Poller Kirchweg and remains one of the calmer residential districts on the eastern bank.

Poll sits on the right bank of the Rhine south of Deutz, along a long stretch of riverbank with the Pollerwiesen meadow as its most visible landmark. It was a small fishing and agricultural village absorbed by Cologne in 1888, and the original village core around Poller Kirchweg still has a few half-timbered houses and the Sankt-Joseph-Kirche. The rest of the district is a mix of late-nineteenth-century Wilhelminian streets, 1950s reconstruction, social housing from the 1960s and 1970s, and recent infill near the river.

Who lives here

A mostly residential population that leans family. Long-term Poll families with a strong local identity (the Poller Maigeloog fishermen's guild still organises traditional events along the river), German working-class and middle-class residents, Turkish and Polish communities, younger professional couples drawn by lower rents than the left bank. Students are fewer than in central districts. The neighborhood feels rooted; many residents have been here for generations.

What it's like during the day

Calm and residential. The Pollerwiesen is a wide riverside meadow used for cycling, jogging, football, picnics, and occasional summer concerts; the Rheinpark opposite (left bank, Deutz) extends the green corridor north. The small commercial spine on Poller Kirchweg holds a bakery, a butcher, a few corner shops and the local Sparkasse branch. The Severinsbrücke at the northern edge connects to the Südstadt on the left bank in five minutes' walk; the Rodenkirchen bridge to the south is further away by car or tram.

What it's like in the evening

Quiet by Cologne standards. A handful of restaurants and corner pubs around Poller Kirchweg, the occasional summer terrace along the Pollerwiesen, the events organised by the Poller Maigeloog in spring and summer. For real nightlife you take the Stadtbahn or walk over the Severinsbrücke to the Südstadt.

Getting around

Stadtbahn line 7 stops at Poll-Salmstraße and Alfred-Schütte-Allee in the heart of the district. Line 8 also passes. The Hauptbahnhof is twelve minutes by Stadtbahn. The Severinsbrücke pedestrian and cycle path puts you on the left bank in five minutes. The cathedral and Innenstadt are within fifteen minutes by tram. Cologne-Bonn airport is twenty minutes by S-Bahn from Deutz.

Eating and shopping

For groceries: Rewe and Aldi on Poller Hauptstraße, the small weekly market on Poller Kirchweg. Restaurants are modest - Italian, Turkish, a Greek tavern, a couple of pizza places, the traditional Em Stredtberge tavern. For a wider choice and Brauhäuser, the Südstadt is five minutes' walk over the Severinsbrücke.

When NOT to pick it

If you want a lively high street with shops and bars outside your door, Poll is too quiet - the local commercial core is small and the streets fall silent by 9 PM. If you want a young scene or central nightlife, you'll cross the river or take the Stadtbahn most weekends. If you want classic Wilhelminian Altbau in long uninterrupted blocks, Poll has only patches. If you need to commute to the Westhafen-style offices in Ehrenfeld or Mülheim Nord, the cross-city ride is longer than from a left-bank base.

Poll is the right pick if you want a quiet residential district on the river, lower rents than the Südstadt or Sülz, a five-minute walk over the bridge to the centre, and a village-like rhythm with strong local traditions. For families and people seeking calm without being far from town, it's a calm sensible choice.
