By day the area lives on the historic centre and tourism: the cathedral, the castle, visitors heading to the monuments, the passage towards the Liberties and Temple Bar. It is dead central and walkable, with the whole heart of Dublin within walking distance.
What it's like in the evening
In the evening the area is animated by the proximity of Temple Bar and the city-centre pubs, with Dublin's nightlife a few steps away. The cathedral area itself is quieter, but a short walk puts you in the middle of the fun. The downside is the tourist crowds.
Getting around
The area is dead central and gets around on foot. The Luas Red line stops at Jervis and Four Courts are a short distance away, and numerous bus routes pass along the arteries of the centre. The rest of the historic centre is all reachable on foot.
Eating and shopping
The offering is that of the historic and tourist centre: pubs, cafés and restaurants, with the markets and shops of the Liberties and the centre a stone's throw away. For shopping there are supermarkets nearby. It is an area where people eat out and live the centre more than do local shopping.
When NOT to pick it
If you are looking for quiet and a calm residential neighbourhood, the Christchurch area is too central and touristy: monuments, visitors, crowds, with few neighbourhood apartments. It makes sense for those who love the historic atmosphere and want the heart of Dublin on their doorstep; less so for those seeking calm and a neighbourhood scale.
