Docklands is Dublin's large quayside area along the Liffey, regenerated from the 1990s onwards. On the north side it hosts the IFSC, the international financial services centre, and continues east with the new glass districts as far as the 3Arena and the Convention Centre. It is the modern, business face of the city: finance, tech, new buildings and a life that revolves around work and events on the river.
Who lives here
The people living here work in the area's finance, tech and services and have chosen the new apartments overlooking the water. It is an international and professional population, young, partly passing through for work. Alongside, pieces of the old north-side dockland Dublin endure. It is a new area, in constant transformation.
What it's like during the day
By day Docklands is the work district: the comings and goings of the IFSC, the cafés and canteens, the flow along the quays. The historic dock buildings live alongside the new towers. The river and the footbridges give character to an otherwise very corporate and modern area.
What it's like in the evening
In the evening it stays animated by events: the concerts at the 3Arena, the shows, the restaurants and bars on the water. It is above all an after-work and event-night zone. For real nightlife you move towards the centre, which is very close. Outside events, the area becomes quieter.
Getting around
The connections are excellent: the Luas Red line crosses the area to the Point terminus, next to the 3Arena, and touches the centre and Connolly station. DART and Commuter trains stop nearby, and numerous bus routes complete the network. The centre is walkable along the Liffey.
Eating and shopping
The offering is that of a modern business district: cafés, restaurants and bars tied to the offices and the river frontage, plus the services of the new complexes. For markets and neighbourhood variety the centre is a stone's throw away. The corporate and event dimension dominates.
When NOT to pick it
If you are looking for a neighbourhood with a historic community, local pubs and period atmosphere, Docklands is the opposite: it is new, financial, made of glass and big events. Evenings outside events can feel empty. It makes sense for those who work here and want modern and connected surroundings; less so for those seeking neighbourhood warmth and history.
