Living in Uhlenhorst, Hamburg

WG-Zimmer Living in Uhlenhorst, Hamburg - direkt von privat, ohne Makler - Hamburg

Hamburg's elegant Stadtteil on the eastern shore of the Außenalster. Villas, sailing clubs, Gründerzeit apartments, tree-lined streets and one of the city's most settled bourgeois communities.

Uhlenhorst sits on the eastern shore of the Außenalster, between the lake and Eilbek, with the Mundsburger Brücke and Kuhmühlenteich on the southern edge. The name comes from a medieval Ulenhorst (an owl-thicket) - a former forested area outside the medieval city. The neighborhood developed in the second half of the nineteenth century as one of Hamburg's most desirable bourgeois residential extensions - Gründerzeit and Jugendstil villas built along the Alsterufer, the Schöne Aussicht (the famous beautiful-view avenue along the lake), and the surrounding streets. The neighborhood has remained one of Hamburg's most desired addresses for over a century.

Who lives here

A high-status settled community. Long-time Hamburg bourgeois families in apartments their families have held for decades, established professionals (lawyers, doctors, senior banking and shipping executives, media executives), academics and researchers, diplomats, opera and theatre professionals (the Komische Oper and the Komödie Winterhuder Fährhaus nearby), and a moderate international expat layer. The resident demographic skews older and more settled than the central neighborhoods, with high resident retention. The international mix is moderate; the resident community is decidedly Hanseatic-bourgeois.

What it's like during the day

Quietly elegant. Mornings along the Alsterufer and in the residential streets behind are a flow of established professionals heading to central Hamburg offices, parents walking children to the various private and public schools, joggers along the famous Außenalster circuit (the 7-km path around the lake), and the cafés-and-bakeries opening early. The cafés along Mühlenkamp, around the Komödie Winterhuder Fährhaus and at the Mundsburg edge - Café Cotidiano, Café Schmidlhof, the various Konditoreien - set the tempo. The Wochenmarkt am Mühlenkamp on Tuesdays and Fridays handles fresh produce. The sailing clubs along the Alster (the NRV Norddeutscher Regatta Verein and others) bring a particular Hamburg-summer flavour. Tourist density is moderate along the Alsterufer, low elsewhere.

What it's like in the evening

Subdued elegance. A handful of upscale restaurants and Weinstuben along Mühlenkamp and the Mundsburg edge - the Restaurant Ti Breizh (French Breton), Restaurant 100/200 (modern German), the Komödie Winterhuder Fährhaus restaurant - handle the evening register. The Café Cotidiano and Café Engel sister venues stay open into the evening. The aperitivo-and-club energy of Sternschanze, St. Pauli or St. Georg requires a 15-minute U-Bahn ride. The streets quiet down by 11 PM. Summer evenings on the Alsterufer with the sailing-club activity, the Bootshaus restaurants and the lakeside Cafe Caspar are an Uhlenhorst ritual.

Getting around

Strong connectivity. The U3 stops at Mundsburg and Uhlandstraße serve the spine. The U1/U3 interchange at Lübecker Straße is at the southern edge. Bus services along Mühlenkamp and along the Alsterufer. Walking to the Hauptbahnhof takes 20 minutes south; to the central Jungfernstieg takes 25 minutes (or a 10-minute Alster ferry in summer). The bike infrastructure along the Alster is excellent - the Alster-Rundweg is one of Hamburg's most-used cycling routes. The Alsterdampfer ferries (running on the lake in summer, included in the HVV ticket system) connect to the central Jungfernstieg.

Eating and shopping

The food scene is moderate-density and quality-leaning. Restaurant Ti Breizh for French Breton, the Komödie Winterhuder Fährhaus restaurant, Restaurant 100/200, modern Italian (the Da Mario and Pizzeria Trattoria sister venues), Japanese (Sushi-Star), Greek (Taverna Olympia), the various Café-Konditoreien. The Wochenmarkt am Mühlenkamp on Tuesdays and Fridays handles fresh produce. For groceries, Edeka on Mühlenkamp, Rewe on Hofweg, Aldi and Lidl on the peripheral streets, Vinzenz Murr and Donisl butchers, Bio Company organic. The bookshops and design shops on Mühlenkamp are worth knowing.

When NOT to pick it

If you want immediate central buzz, affordability or a young creative scene. Uhlenhorst is among the most expensive residential districts of Hamburg - rents are comparable to Harvestehude across the lake. The neighborhood is settled and the demographic skews older than the gentrified neighborhoods further south; newcomers from creative-leaning cities can find the calm understimulating. The Alsterufer addresses (the famous Schöne Aussicht and Bellevue streets) carry premium prices. Some of the historic apartments have Denkmalschutz (heritage protection) constraints on renovation.

Uhlenhorst works particularly well for the established senior corporate or professional with a central office, for the family with school-age children seeking elegance with central access and excellent schools, for the long-stay international expat who values the Alster on the doorstep, for the cultural professional at the surrounding theatres, and for the established resident who appreciates Hanseatic-bourgeois character. Rents sit comparable to Harvestehude and Rotherbaum for the most popular blocks; for similar character at slightly lower rent, the adjacent Hohenfelde or Borgfelde offer comparable centrality.
