Chiaravalle is a rural village at the far south of Milan, grown up around its Abbazia di Chiaravalle, founded in 1135 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (Cistercian order); the current church was consecrated in 1221. Striking features of the abbey are the bell tower nicknamed "Ciribiciaccola" (mid-14th century, attributed to Francesco Pecorari), the cloister and the medieval mill. The village, annexed to Milan in 1923, is immersed in the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano, among fields, farmsteads and canals: a countryside enclave within the city's boundaries.

The village is about 5 km from the historic centre and is physically separated from the city by countryside: very peripheral and bus-dependent.
