The former industrial village in eastern Milan, on the river Lambro, around the large Lambrate station. A working-class past (the Lambretta was born here), today residential and creative, a stone's throw from Città Studi.
Lambrate is a semi-peripheral district in the eastern part of Milan, once an autonomous municipality annexed to the city in 1923 and which owes its name to the river Lambro. For much of the 20th century it was an industrial hub: in the Innocenti plants, here, the famous Lambretta was born (the scooter takes its name precisely from Lambrate). The district revolves around the Milano Lambrate station (inaugurated in 1931), one of the main ones in the city. Today it is a mix of residential streets, converted former-industrial buildings and a creative and artisan scene, right next to the university district of Città Studi.
Who lives here
Long-standing working-class residents, students spilling over from Città Studi, creatives and artisans in the former-industrial spaces, and young people looking for square metres and more affordable rents than the centre.
By day
Industrious and partly creative: old warehouses transformed into studios and workspaces, alongside the residential streets. The large Parco Lambro (from the 1930s) is the green reference of the wider area.
By night
A quiet and informal atmosphere. The district's landmark is the Birrificio Lambrate, founded in 1996, one of the first brewpubs in Italy and still in operation: craft beer and a local meeting place.
Getting around
The M2 green line stops at Lambrate FS, in direct interchange with the Milano Lambrate railway station - Milan's third largest by number of tracks after Centrale and Porta Garibaldi - from which regional and national trains depart (towards Genoa, Venice, Bologna) along with the suburban rail link. On the surface there are the tram 19 and the trolleybus 93. The centre is about 6 km away.
Eating and shopping
The most recognisable name is the Birrificio Lambrate. Informal venues revolve around the brewpubs and the former-industrial spaces; for the rest it is a neighbourhood offering, with shops and supermarkets for everyday shopping.
When NOT to choose it
It is semi-peripheral, not central, and the area around the station can look a little run-down. A useful clarification: Lambrate was the cradle of Ventura Lambrate, the design district that animated the Fuorisalone in the former-industrial spaces (from 2010 to 2017), but that project then moved (Ventura Centrale) and finally ended: the "design" reputation remains, the event is no longer here.
Lambrate works for students, young people and creatives looking for space, lower rents, excellent rail connections and proximity to Città Studi. Those who want the evening buzz of the centre look to the Navigli or Porta Romana. Next door is Città Studi, more university-oriented and residential.
