Niguarda is a residential district in northern Milan (Municipio 9), once an autonomous municipality annexed to the city in 1923. Its landmark is the Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda (formerly Ospedale Niguarda Ca' Granda), inaugurated in 1939 and among the largest and most important hospitals in Italy. To the north the district overlooks the vast Parco Nord Milano, a metropolitan park of about 640 hectares created on reclaimed post-war industrial land. Niguarda also has a strong Resistance memory: it was the first district of Milan to rise up against the Nazi-Fascist occupation, free from the evening of 24 April 1945.

Getting around
No metro stop within the district. The M5 lilac line runs along the eastern edge, on Viale Fulvio Testi, with the stops Ca' Granda (the closest to the hospital), Bicocca and Bignami (northern terminus) - not the M3 yellow line. The direct connection with the centre is the tram 4, which has its terminus here (Niguarda) and runs all the way to Cairoli M1 (Piazza Castello). It is an area of the north, well connected by tram but without a metro in its residential heart.

A neighbourhood offering: shops, bars and local restaurants serving residents and those who gravitate around the hospital. Practical rather than spectacular.
When NOT to choose it
If you want the metro on your doorstep and the life of the centre. Niguarda is the northern outskirts: no metro stop in the heart of the district (you rely on tram 4 or walk to the M5), and the large hospital generates traffic and pressure on parking in the surrounding streets. It is quiet and functional, not a nightlife area.
