Living in Cool, Rotterdam

The wijk around Witte de Withstraat. The densest bar, restaurant and gallery scene in Rotterdam, late kitchens, a young and creative population.

Cool is the wijk wedged between Centrum, Dijkzigt and Oude Westen, named after the medieval village that once stood here and rebuilt entirely after 1940. Its spine is Witte de Withstraat, a five-hundred-metre strip that has become the densest concentration of bars, restaurants, galleries and creative studios in the city. The wijk also covers Eendrachtsplein, Mauritsweg, and the southern end of the Westersingel - a long canal-park lined with sculpture.

Who lives here

The youngest demographic profile in central Rotterdam. Students from EUR, Hogeschool and Willem de Kooning art academy (which sits in the wijk on Wijnhaven), young professionals in design and tech, and a strong international set. Apartments are mostly studios and one-bedrooms in modern blocks above the bar strip - long-term Dutch residents are a minority and turnover is high.

What it's like during the day

The art academies and small galleries (TENT, MAMA, Witte de With) give the day an unhurried creative feel. Eendrachtsplein and the southern end of Westersingel fill in fair weather with students and laptop workers. The Westersingel sculpture route - with Picasso's Sylvette and works by Rodin and Paul McCarthy - runs along the canal-park. Saturdays bring the Eendrachtsplein market and steady foot traffic onto Witte de Withstraat through the afternoon.

What it's like in the evening

The loudest evening in central Rotterdam. Witte de Withstraat fills from 6 PM and runs to 1 AM weeknights, 3-4 AM weekends. The atmosphere is mixed - students, thirty-somethings, queer-friendly, international. Bars include De Witte Aap, Bar Tabac, NRC, Café Floor; the live-music venue Annabel and the Bird jazz/club around the corner anchor the music scene. The Mauritsweg side has the louder weekend clubs.

Getting around

Metro Eendrachtsplein (lines A, B, C) is at the wijk's heart; trams 7 and 21 stop on Mauritsweg and Westblaak. Rotterdam Centraal is a ten-minute walk or three-minute metro ride north. The wijk is small and walkable end-to-end in eight minutes; bikes cover anything further. Late-night cycling home is the default - taxis are available but rarely needed for short hops.

Eating and shopping

Witte de Withstraat is the restaurant strip - Bazar (Middle Eastern), NRC, Ter Marsch & Co (burgers), Picknick (brunch), Café in Den Ouden Doelen. Asian Glories (Chinese), Restaurant Old Dutch. Independent boutiques on Schilderstraat and Witte de Withstraat itself. Albert Heijn at Beurs (five minutes' walk east) is the nearest supermarket; Jumbo on Mauritsweg is closer. The Markthal is ten minutes' walk.

When NOT to pick it

If you want quiet sleep. Cool is loud - apartments above the bar strip vibrate on Friday and Saturday nights, and the noise carries into adjacent streets. The wijk is small, with little green space at the door (Westersingel helps). Many flats are studios, and rents per square metre are among the highest in Rotterdam. Cool is at its best for people in their twenties and thirties who want to live above the scene rather than commute to it, and don't mind the soundtrack.
