Living in Veerenni, Tallinn

Veerenni is a central asum just south of the Old Town, and it is one of the most successful examples of transformation in Tallinn: a former industrial area that has become, within a few years, one of the city's most active new-build residential neighbourhoods. The Uus-Veerenni project brought around a thousand new apartments to the site of old factories, conceived as a neighbourhood in its own right - described by those who live there as a small, quiet village in the heart of the city, five minutes on foot from the centre.

Who lives here

It is a young neighbourhood in terms of population: families, young professionals and people who rent or buy in the new buildings, drawn by the combination of a modern apartment and a central location. The profile is international and contemporary, with services designed for everyday life - a kindergarten, small businesses and shared neighbourhood spaces within the project itself.

What it's like during the day

During the day Veerenni is a new and orderly residential area: well-kept courtyards, shared spaces, the quiet comings and goings of those taking their children to kindergarten or working from home. Everything is recent and built to a resident's scale, and the centre is so close that many reach it on foot in a few minutes for anything they need.

What it's like in the evening

In the evening it is silent and residential, as you would expect from a new-build neighbourhood lived in mostly by families and young couples. For venues and nightlife the centre is a few minutes away on foot; the neighbourhood itself stays a calm place to come back to.

Getting around

The trump card is closeness: the centre is about five minutes away on foot. Several bus lines serve the area, and the Vana-Lõuna tram terminus sits right on the edge of the neighbourhood, connecting it to the tram network. Thanks to its location, Veerenni is one of those neighbourhoods where you can live comfortably without a car.

Eating and shopping

The local offering is growing with the neighbourhood: small businesses and service spaces created within the project, plus the supermarkets nearby. For variety - restaurants, markets, venues - the centre is a few minutes' walk away. It is a convenient neighbourhood, with the essentials on your doorstep and everything else a short walk away.

When NOT to pick it

If you are after an entirely historic neighbourhood, made of wooden houses and with a long memory, here new building dominates, despite a few surviving wooden blocks in the older streets. As an area still under development, in some spots you live alongside the building sites of the later phases. It is perfect for anyone who wants a new apartment and a central location; less suited to anyone after period character above all, or a neighbourhood that is already entirely finished.
