Living in Purpan, Toulouse
Colocation Living in Purpan, Toulouse - chambre à louer entre particuliers, sans agence - Toulouse
West of Toulouse, Purpan revolves around the large CHU Purpan hospital, a magnet for healthcare work, served by tram T1 (the Purpan stop serves the hospital) - with the residential Cartoucherie neighborhood right alongside.
West of the centre, Purpan is dominated by the CHU Purpan, one of Toulouse's two large university hospitals: a huge site bringing together emergency, maternity (Paule de Viguier), paediatrics and numerous departments, and which alone employs thousands of people. Alongside, the Cartoucherie is a now well-established residential neighborhood, carved out of a former industrial area and today inhabited, served by the tram. It's a practical sector, made for those who gravitate around the hospital, with the advantage of the tram linking it in a direct line to the rest of the city.
Who lives here
Mainly hospital staff from the CHU Purpan - doctors, nurses, technical and administrative staff - plus students from the linked healthcare schools, researchers and families. In the Cartoucherie the profile is more residential and mixed, with couples and family households. It's a population tied to the hospital's rhythm and attentive to proximity to work.
What it's like during the day
By day the hospital hub is the beating heart: a large flow of staff, patients and visitors around the tram stops. The Cartoucherie offers a calmer residential fabric, with green spaces and neighborhood amenities. A little to the north-east are the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre (Arènes Romaines), which give the area its name. On the whole an orderly sector, well connected but not touristy.
What it's like in the evening
Evenings are quiet, with the residential rhythm taking over once the daytime hospital flow has died down (apart from the constant activity of the emergency department). Bars and restaurants for a lively night out are elsewhere: the tram and the metro put the centre within reach in a few minutes, so anyone seeking nightlife can easily head towards the Capitole or Saint-Cyprien.
Getting around
The key link is tram T1: the Purpan stop serves the large hospital hub, while Arènes Romaines and Cartoucherie serve the sector's residential areas along the line. The T1 runs down to Arènes, a large interchange hub with metro A: from there the Capitole is a handful of minutes away (a few stops). The tram continues north to Blagnac. Numerous bus lines complete the links; by car the centre is a few kilometres away.
Eating and shopping
The offering is the everyday kind: supermarkets, bakeries and a few restaurants near the hospital and along the residential streets of the Cartoucherie, handy for those working shifts. It's not a neighborhood of great culinary choice: for restaurants, shops and richer markets it's best to head down towards Saint-Cyprien or the centre, both close thanks to tram and metro.
When NOT to pick it
If you're after the charm of the historic centre's buildings or a bustling shopping street on your doorstep, Purpan is more functional than picturesque. If you don't work at the CHU and don't need its proximity, other neighborhoods offer more life. The hospital presence, with the comings and goings of the emergency department, can bring some traffic and movement right next to the site. And if you want everything on foot in the touristy heart, you're still on the west side, not in the centre.
Purpan-Cartoucherie is the right pick if you work at the CHU Purpan and want to live a stone's throw from the ward, with tram T1 departing from the hospital entrance and taking you in a direct line to Arènes and, via metro A, to the Capitole in a few minutes. For healthcare staff, students of the schools linked to the hospital and anyone wanting a short home-work commute in a well-connected, residential sector, it's a very sensible solution.
