A working-class southern district of 19th-century tenement blocks and post-war housing, with the Wroclavia mall and the main railway station nearby.

Huby is the working-class southern district that sits just south of Wrocław Główny railway station and the Wroclavia shopping center. It's a layered mix of 19th-century tenement blocks, post-war housing estates and a small commercial spine along ul. Kamienna and ul. Borowska, with one of the easier rail and tram connections in the city. The district has historically been one of the rougher inner-city quarters but, like Przedmieście Oławskie, has been undergoing slow redevelopment.

What it is

An inner-city district immediately south of the railway, organised around the spine of ul. Kamienna and the cross-streets running through to the southern ring road. Architecture is layered: 19th-century tenement blocks on the streets closest to the rail line, post-war communist housing in the middle, and pockets of newer development on the southern edge. The district extends south toward Tarnogaj and Krzyki and connects to Powstańców Śl skich to the west.

Who lives here

A genuinely mixed working- and middle-class population. Long-tenured residents in the period blocks and post-war estates, students and young professionals drawn by the lower rents and the easy rail access, families with school-age children, and a growing layer of international tenants taking advantage of the proximity to the railway station and the Wroclavia mall. The demographic mix is more settled than Plac Grunwaldzki and less polished than Krzyki.

What it's like during the day

Calm and residential. The streets carry steady tram and bus traffic; the small grocers, bakeries and corner shops handle everyday errands; children walk to the local primary schools. The Wroclavia mall on the northern edge of the district is one of Wrocław's biggest shopping centers and draws shoppers from across the city.

What it's like in the evening

Quiet. Huby is essentially residential and has no significant bar or restaurant scene - a few neighborhood pizzerias, kebab spots and casual restaurants handle quick dinners; the rest is at home. The Old Town and Powstańców Śl skich are short tram rides for the heavier nightlife. Some streets close to the railway lines feel rougher at night; the safety profile varies block by block.

Getting around

Excellent. Multiple MPK tram lines run along ul. Kamienna and ul. Borowska, putting the Rynek 10 minutes by tram and Plac Grunwaldzki an easy ride east. The main railway station Wrocław Główny is at the northern edge - a five-minute walk for most addresses - putting all of Poland within easy reach. Bus lines fill in the gaps. The cycle network is good and the flat terrain makes cycling easy. Car access is straightforward via the southern ring road.

Eating and shopping

A solid offering. The Wroclavia mall has a full Carrefour supermarket, dozens of fashion brands, restaurants, a cinema and a food court. The side streets have small grocers, bakeries and the standard Biedronka and Lidl supermarkets. The restaurant scene is modest - pizzerias, kebab spots, a couple of Asian places, and the kind of casual neighborhood places that have served the district for decades.

When NOT to pick it

If you want a polished or fully redeveloped district, Huby is still in transition - some blocks are restored, others still need work, and the streetscape can feel rough on a grey day. If you want walkable nightlife and a dense bar scene, the Old Town is a tram ride. If you want the design and craft buzz of Nadodrze, this district is more ordinary and more working-class. And the safety profile varies, with addresses near the railway lines noticeably rougher than the inner blocks; choose a specific street carefully.

Huby rewards a particular profile: residents who value the easy rail and tram connections (especially useful for anyone with a Polish-rail commute), the Wroclavia mall at the door, lower rents than the central districts, and the gentle ongoing redevelopment of one of the city's working-class southern quarters.
