Lübars is the far north of Berlin, in the Reinickendorf district, and it's a rare thing: the best-preserved rural village in the city. Founded around 1230 as an Angerdorf, it still preserves today its medieval layout, with the Dorfanger - the long common green at the center - the little Dorfkirche, the old farms and the riding stables all around. It's the only village in Berlin where farming is still practiced, surrounded by the fields and the nature of the Tegeler Fließ. Plainly put: here you're inside Berlin only on paper. In practice you live in the countryside.
Who lives here
Long-established German families, people tied to horses and the land, retirees, the odd professional after total calm who has a car. It's not a neighborhood for students or young arrivals: no nearby universities, no nightlife, no urban Kiez life. Those who choose Lübars do so for the space, the greenery and the silence, accepting the isolation in exchange.
What it's like during the day
By day Lübars is a countryside postcard. The Dorfanger with its little church, the fences, the horses in the riding stables, the trails that lose themselves in the fields and along the Tegeler Fließ. It's a day-trip destination for Berliners on weekends, especially for families, hikers and riders. Very few services: a couple of inns, no chains, no commercial life. Beautiful for walking and breathing, poor in everything else.
What it's like in the evening
In the evening the curtain falls. Lübars is dark, quiet and practically still: the odd rustic Gaststätte with German cuisine, and little else. No bars, no venues, no nightlife. To really go out you have to head toward Tegel or the center, and in the evening the connections thin out considerably. It's absolute peace, if that's what you're after.
Getting around
Here lies the critical point. Lübars has neither S-Bahn nor U-Bahn: no rail enters the village. It's reached only by bus, in practice with line 222, which connects Alt-Lübars to the Waidmannslust S-Bahn station (S1 line) and, on the other side, to Alt-Tegel (U-Bahn U6) and the Tegel S-Bahn. From Waidmannslust the S1 gets you to the center, but it takes time and at least one change. Without a car, life here is inconvenient, and the evening services are sparse.
Eating and shopping
A minimal offering. In the village you'll find the odd traditional inn and a beer garden, perfect for a day-trip stop, but for real shopping you have to move toward Wittenau or Waidmannslust, where there are supermarkets like Rewe and Edeka and the everyday shops. Inside Lübars don't expect either large supermarkets or gastronomic choice: it's a hamlet, not a fully equipped neighborhood.
When NOT to pick it
If you're a student, an Erasmus or a worker without a car: the isolation and the sparse buses make it impractical for you. If you want social life, venues, shops downstairs or fast trips to university and the center. If you need metro or S-Bahn on foot. In short, if you're after urban life, Lübars is the wrong place.
Lübars is the right pick only for those after silence, nature and a countryside rhythm, who have a car and aren't afraid to live at the very edge of Berlin: for everyone else, it's a beautiful oasis to visit, but hard to live in.
