Niederschönhausen is a green residential neighborhood in the far north of the Pankow district, away from the chaos of the center. It's made of tree-lined streets, period villas and single-family houses with gardens, with a quiet, affluent air that sets it apart from the rest of the city. The historic heart is the Schloss Schönhausen, a baroque castle set in the great Schlosspark crossed by the river Panke. Here Wilhelm Pieck, first and only president of the DDR, had his official residence from 1949 to 1960, and in the villas of the nearby Majakowskiring lived the nomenklatura of East Germany. Today it's a quiet, clean area, where people come for the calm more than for the buzz.
Who lives here
Stable German families, mature professionals, the odd academic, people who have chosen greenery and tranquility over Kiez life. Few students and few young singles: the neighborhood is more "family home" than "noisy shared room". A historic elderly population inhabits the more peripheral parts.

The evening is truly quiet. Niederschönhausen is not a nightlife neighborhood: few lights, the odd scattered venue, streets that empty early. For bars, restaurants and nightlife you head toward Pankow center or, further down, to Prenzlauer Berg. Those who live here come home for the silence.
Getting around
The tram is the backbone. The M1 line has its terminus right in Niederschönhausen (Schillerstraße / Rosenthal Nord) and crosses the neighborhood passing by Pankow Kirche to the S+U Pankow station and then straight toward the center (Am Kupfergraben, Friedrichstraße). The 50 line serves the area along the Grabbeallee. At Pankow you change to the U-Bahn U2 (northern terminus) and the S-Bahn S2, S8 and S85. Several buses round out the local connections.
Eating and shopping
For everyday shopping there are the usual supermarkets (Rewe, Edeka, discounters) and small neighborhood shops. The offering of restaurants on the spot is limited and local in style; for choice and variety it's better to head down toward the center of Pankow, a few minutes by tram.
When NOT to pick it
If you want nightlife, venues within walking distance and a young scene: there's none here. If you need to be right in the heart of the city, know that you're in the far north and depend on the tram. If you're after the classic shared apartment full of peers, it's easier to find it elsewhere: this is a neighborhood of houses and families.
Niederschönhausen is the right pick if you're after greenery, silence and a residential, orderly Berlin, accepting that you'll move by tram to reach the life of the center. For those who put tranquility before everything, it's a rare corner.
