Alquiler de habitación en piso compartido Living in Recoletos, Madrid - sin agencia - Madrid

The westernmost barrio of the Salamanca district, bordered by the Paseo de Recoletos and the Castellana. Madrid's most refined and expensive corner, with luxury shops and embassies.

Recoletos is the westernmost of the six barrios of the Distrito de Salamanca, bordered by the Paseo de Recoletos and the Paseo de la Castellana to the west, Calle de Goya to the north, Calle de Velázquez to the east, and Calle de Alcalá to the south. The name comes from the seventeenth-century Convento de los Agustinos Recoletos that once occupied the site. Today it contains the Biblioteca Nacional de España, the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, the Plaza de Colón with its underground theatre and ever-changing public installations, and one of the highest concentrations of foreign embassies in the city.

Who lives here

Wealthy and stable. Long-term Madrileños in family-owned apartments (many of them five and six rooms in nineteenth-century buildings), a sizeable diplomatic community attached to the embassies on Calle de Serrano and the surrounding streets, retired professionals, and a younger layer of senior corporate executives who rent. Families are visible, especially around the Plaza del Marqués de Salamanca. Apartments tend to be large and well-maintained.

What it's like during the day

Calm and unhurried. The Paseo de Recoletos - the wide tree-lined boulevard that gives the barrio its name - is lined with monumental cafés and terrazas (the Café Gijón is the most famous, a literary institution since 1888). Office workers from the financial buildings on the Castellana fill the cafés at lunchtime, but the residential side streets stay quiet. Children play in the small park behind the Biblioteca Nacional and on the grass strip of the Paseo. The flagship Spanish department store El Corte Inglés is two stops north at Serrano.

What it's like in the evening

Refined and early. Restaurants in Recoletos skew classic and expensive - Lhardy nearby, La Trainera, Horcher. The historic Café Gijón keeps a long literary tradition with afternoon coffee and late dinner. Few bars in the strict sense; nightlife is in Chueca (10 minutes' walk west) or Chamberí (similar distance north). The barrio is essentially asleep by midnight on weekdays, slightly later on weekends.

Getting around

Metro line 4 (Colón, Serrano), line 2 (Banco de España, Retiro, Príncipe de Vergara), and Cercanías Recoletos for connections to Atocha and Chamartín. The neighbourhood is well-positioned for walking: the Centro is fifteen minutes south, Retiro Park is across the street, the Castellana axis north reaches the financial district in twenty minutes. Cycling has improved with bike lanes on the Paseo de la Castellana.

Eating and shopping

Calle de Serrano is the spine of Spanish luxury retail - Loewe, Carolina Herrera, Roberto Verino, plus the Gold Quarter concentration of international brands. Mercado de la Paz (the most upscale of Madrid's traditional markets) is two minutes east, on the boundary with Lista. Restaurants and cafeterías are spread along the Paseo and the side streets. For everyday groceries, several Sánchez Romero (high-end Madrid grocery chain), Carrefour Express, El Corte Inglés Gourmet Experience at Serrano.

When NOT to pick it

If you want affordability, lively bars on the doorstep, or a younger demographic - Recoletos is none of those. Apartments are excellent but expensive, with very low turnover. If you want a real barrio atmosphere with neighbourhood ties and abuelos on the benches, the more central pockets of Chamberí or even residential Salamanca work better; Recoletos can feel slightly impersonal, with many embassy-residence buildings and high diplomatic turnover. The barrio is at its best for people who want elegance, the Paseo on the doorstep, the Biblioteca Nacional as their neighbourhood library, and don't mind paying for it.
