The former industrial district in north-western Milan, among chimneys, former factories and the famous Gasometers. Today a Politecnico hub in full transformation - connected by rail, not by the metro.
Bovisa is a district in north-western Milan with a strong industrial past: from the end of the 19th century it hosted chemical factories and the gasworks, of which the large Gasometers of Bovisa remain as a symbol. With the closure of the industries (completed in the 1990s), the area reinvented itself around the campus of the Politecnico di Milano (Design and Engineering) and is today a student district in full transformation. The gasometers area is at the centre of the Bovisa-Goccia masterplan, designed by the Renzo Piano studio, which is transforming it into a new Politecnico hub.
Who lives here
Politecnico students, long-standing residents and creatives drawn by the former-industrial spaces and the more affordable prices. It is a district in evolution, often indicated as the next up-and-coming area.
By day
Industrious and in transformation: the Politecnico campus, the former factories and the spaces of the conversion. The Triennale opened a venue here in 2006, reinforcing the area's creative and design soul.
By night
A student and informal atmosphere, with an evening offering that is still limited. It is not a nightlife hub: neighbourhood venues and gathering places tied to the university population.
Getting around
No metro: the reference is the Milano Bovisa Politecnico railway station (Trenord/Ferrovienord), served by the suburban lines S1, S2, S3, S4 and S13 and by the Malpensa Express to the airport. On the surface there is the trolleybus 92 (Bovisa FN-Lodi M3). It is a semi-peripheral area of the north-west, well connected by train but not by the metro.
Eating and shopping
A university-district offering: venues at student prices, bars and trattorias tied to the campus, plus local shops for everyday shopping.
When NOT to choose it
If the metro is essential for you: Bovisa is reached by train, not by the metro. It is also semi-peripheral and retains a former-industrial fabric that is at times rough.
Bovisa works for Politecnico students, young people and creatives who accept the rail connections and an area in transformation in exchange for space and lower rents. Those who want the metro on their doorstep and an already polished setting look to the other Politecnico hub, Città Studi, which is more residential.
