Living in Levent, Istanbul

Istanbul's flagship financial district, on the European side in the Beşiktaş municipality. A cluster of glass towers, corporate headquarters and high-end malls wrapped around two M2 metro stations - a prestige business-and-residential address where rooms are scarce, central and expensive.

Levent is a neighborhood in the Beşiktaş municipality on the European side of Istanbul, north of the Golden Horn, and it is the city's flagship financial district. Together with nearby Maslak and Şişli, it forms one of the great skyline clusters of Istanbul - a tight run of glass office towers, bank headquarters and mixed-use skyscrapers strung along Büyükdere Avenue. It is not an old, lived-in quarter in the way much of the city is: the permanent resident population is small, and the area is defined by its towers, its malls and the corporate traffic that pours through it on weekdays. For the people who do live here, Levent is the prestige European-side address - central, polished, exceptionally well-connected, and priced to match.

Who lives here

A small, affluent, business-oriented population. Levent's registered resident numbers are modest - only a few thousand - because so much of the area is given over to offices and commercial towers rather than housing. The people who do take rooms and apartments here tend to be senior professionals, executives, business owners and expats on relocation, drawn by the prestige of the address and the short commute to the surrounding offices. The neighboring quarter of Etiler, also in Beşiktaş, is one of the favourite areas of Istanbul's elite, and the whole Levent-Etiler-Maslak corridor reads as upscale and corporate rather than bohemian. Demand around the Levent-Gayrettepe finance belt is among the strongest in the city, and rooms here are scarce and move quickly.

What it's like during the day

This is a working financial district, and it shows. By day Levent hums with the corporate crowd: the area is anchored by some of Turkey's best-known towers - the İş Bankası Towers, the Yapı Kredi headquarters, the Sabancı Center, the Metrocity Towers and the 54-floor İstanbul Sapphire, long among the tallest buildings in the country - and the streets between them fill with office workers, taxis and shuttle buses. Shopping is a major part of daytime life: Kanyon, an award-winning open-air mall built into a curving canyon-like form, sits directly above Levent metro station, while the Metrocity mall connects straight into the metro too. It's businesslike and built-up rather than picturesque, but everything an office district needs - banks, cafés, lunch spots, gyms, services - is on the doorstep.

What it's like in the evening

Quieter than its daytime energy suggests. Levent is a work-and-shopping district first, so once the offices empty it doesn't have the bar-street buzz of Beyoğlu or Kadıköy. What it does have is the malls - Kanyon and Metrocity keep their restaurants, cafés and cinemas running into the evening - and easy access to livelier scenes nearby. Neighboring Etiler has long been known for its upmarket restaurants, cafés and nightlife, and the bars and dining of Beşiktaş, Nişantaşı and Bomonti are a short metro ride down the M2. Many residents treat Levent as a comfortable, well-placed base and head a stop or two for a night out.

Getting around

Excellent, and the single biggest reason to live here. Levent is served by the M2 metro - the main European-side line, running from Yenikapı in the south up to Hacıosman in the north - at two stations: Levent and 4.Levent. The M2 links the district directly to Şişli, Taksim, Şişhane and across the Golden Horn, and northward to the Maslak business towers, with Kanyon and Metrocity built right into the station concourses. The line also connects to the wider network - the M6 branch runs nearby toward Boğaziçi University, and at Şişli-Mecidiyeköy the M2 meets the metrobüs bus-rapid-transit line and the M7. İETT operates a large bus hub beside 4.Levent, and the İstanbulkart runs everything with discounted transfers. The trade-off is the surface traffic: Büyükdere Avenue and the surrounding roads are among the busiest in the city, so underground is almost always the faster way to move.

Eating and shopping

Comprehensive, and skewed upmarket. The malls do a lot of the work: Kanyon and Metrocity hold the brand stores, supermarkets, food courts, restaurants and cinemas, and Akmerkez - a large, long-established mall in adjacent Etiler - adds another full retail offer a short walk or bus ride away. Around the towers you'll find cafés, bakeries and lunch counters serving the office crowd, while Etiler brings the higher-end restaurants and the Zorlu Center complex in nearby Zincirlikuyu adds luxury shopping, dining and a performing-arts venue. For everyday groceries there are supermarkets and corner shops, though Levent leans more toward polished mall retail than the street-market texture you find in older parts of Istanbul.

When NOT to pick it

If you want charm, old-Istanbul atmosphere, or a bargain. Levent is a financial district through and through - glass towers, corporate traffic and malls, with little of the historic streets, seaside texture or neighborhood community feel that draw people to places like Kadıköy, Cihangir or Beşiktaş proper. It is also one of the most expensive addresses on the European side: the Levent-Etiler-Maslak corridor commands a steep premium, rooms are scarce, and the prestige of the location is priced in. The streets can feel quiet and corporate in the evenings, and the surrounding avenues are heavily congested by car. If your priority is atmosphere, affordability or waterfront life, you'd look elsewhere.

Levent is at its best for executives, professionals and expats who want a prestigious, central, ultra-connected European-side base with offices, malls and the M2 metro on the doorstep - and who value that polish and convenience enough to accept the high rents, the corporate feel and the lack of old-Istanbul charm that come with the city's flagship business district.
